CONCRETE: MATERIAL

Concrete has usually to meet one or more of four functional requirements; strength, durability, fire protection and thermal insulation, and its properties depend on the correct selection of materials as well as on good practice on site. There is a wide range of cements and aggregates from which to choose. This digest brings up to date the information about their main characteristics and the properties of concretes made from them, previously published in Digest 5 which is now withdrawn. It describes the effects on concrete strength and workability of adjusting mix proportions according to the grading zone of the fine aggregate and includes a new section about admixtures. Reinforcing materials are not discussed. /Author/TRRL/
