INFLUENCE OF CREEP AND SHRINKAGE ON CONCRETE BRIDGES
A literature survey is reported (which formed part of a co-ordinated research program into concrete box girders), which was confined to three aspects: the factors which influence the creep and shrinkage characteristics of concrete with emphasis on methods of assessing these effects; single methods of analysis for creep and shrinkage effects; and papers on creep and shrinkage related to bridge structures. Three different methods of analysis for creep effects in concrete structures are examined and their limitations are discussed. The methods are: the effective modulus method, rate of creep method and the method of superposition. Modifications observed in structures after part of the load had been applied are reviewed, and aspects of stress redistribution which require further study are indicated.
