Use of Probe Data for Freight Planning and Operations

The objective of this synthesis is to document current state department of transportation (DOT) practices regarding the use of probe data in freight planning and modeling and in operations management applications. The synthesis also describes the types of probe data available to state DOTs. Information for this study was gathered through a literature review, a survey of state DOTs, and follow-up interviews with selected DOTs. Three case examples provide additional information on approaches to using probe data in freight planning: (1) the problems the DOT is trying to solve, (2) data sources, (3) tools and analytical methods, and (4) results or outputs.
