Comparing the Fatigue Performance of HMA Samples with PMA to their Multiple Stress Creep Recovery and Double Notched Tension Test Properties
The addition of polymers to asphalt binder has enhanced Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) rutting and fatigue performance. In Ontario, the performance of Polymer Modified Asphalt (PMA) is evaluated by using the Double Edge Notched Tension (DENT) test and Multiple Stress Creep Recovery (MSCR) test. Previous research has found that the DENT test is a poor indicator of the presence of polymer and therefore it was expected that it would be a poor indicator of fatigue performance. This paper examined the relationship between HMA fatigue performance, percent recovery, and Critical Crack Tip Opening Displacement (CTOD), which will be used as a basis to discuss the DENT. Four-point Bending Beam Fatigue (4PB) testing on HMA samples showed poor correlation between the CTOD and fatigue performance. The results have also shown a positive correlation between the percent recovery of the asphalt cement and the fatigue performance. The addition of polymer increased the 4PB fatigue life, but the magnitude of the increase depended on the source binder. This testing has added evidence that the CTOD and other DENT test properties may not effectively evaluate the performance of PMAs. This paper also used DSR master curves to provide a clearer picture of the effect polymer modification.
