An investigation is reported of the influence of hydrocarbon groups (asphaltenes, resins and oils) on the final behavior of the binders. Separation of the material into several groups of hydrocarbon constituents was done by a technique (illustrated diagramatically) which used propane to precipitate the most condensed and polar constituents. The gel permeation technique coupled with molecular weight measurements by the osmometric method was used in testing the efficiency of separation at the molecular distribution curve level. These measurements also helped in evaluating the influence of aging. Mechanical tests were performed which included rotary bending fatigue tests on a sand mix, and compressive strength tests on test specimens. These tests allied with rheological curves have proved an effective method of differentiating binders. The degree of complex flow at different temperatures have been calculated with the help of shearing stress/rate of shear curves obtained with a cone-plate viscometer. The tests performed on the two asphalts on which this investigation was based showed a certain number of differences but other binders included in the program exhibited various aspects of mechanical and rheological behavior. Asphalt 67214 shows the greatest tendency to "sol" type behavior, while asphalt of Saharan stock illustrates the "gel" type behavior which is caused by a maltenes phase with insufficient solvent properties. The separation technique adopted in this study enabled the characterization of fractions from the point of view of constitution and rheology. The soft asphaltenes phase is largely Newtonian in behavior, but the non-volatile maltenes show complex behavior at very low rates of shear.
