A SURVEY OF POSSIBLE SOURCES IN WALES OF RAW MATERIALS FOR THE MANUFACTURE OF A LIGHTWEIGHT EXPANDED SLATE AGGREGATE

In order to determine the location and abundance of slate suitable for conversion into a lightweight aggregate a survey of the slate formations of Wales was made by E.H. Coleman of BRS in collaboration with HM Geological Survey in 1932. The slate area of North Pembrokeshire, Machynlleth, Caernarvonshire, Blaenau Ffestiniog, and Llangollen, were visited and ninety-one slate samples were collected covering the whole spectrum of the Welsh slate formations. A sample of each slate was heated to ascertain its expansion and value as raw material for lightweight aggregate manufacture. In all areas, except that of Caernarvonshire, some slates capable of forming lightweight aggregates were found. Very good aggregates were obtained with slates from the Llangollen and Blaenau Ffestiniog areas. In all areas visited there was an abundance of waste slate. This survey has now been brought up to date in the present paper.
