FIELD EVALUATION OF CHEM-COMP SHRINKAGE COMPENSATING CEMENT CONCRETE . SS 299, PHASE III--FINAL REPORT
This last phase of an investigation of the properties and compatibility of Chem-Comp cement with various concrete admixtures as well as the workability and durability of the total concrete mix, involved the study of the components of a total of twenty-three bridges (highway bridges and one pedestrian bridge). The compenents studied included five decks, four sidewalks, seven median barriers, five railing barriers and two railing bases. Of the bridges studied (all were constructed between 1968 and 1973), nine showed no shrinkage cracks before traffic was applied and fourteen showed some defect when inspected. Due to the increased cost of construction using Chem-Comp cement concrete (higher labor and materials) and the fact that the shrinkage cracking was not eliminated, the Bridge Section of the Minnesota Highway Department has decided to discontinue the use of the material.
