THE INFLUENCE OF PERCENTAGE COLUMN REINFORCEMENT ON MORTAR COMPRESSION JOINTS FOR FRAMED STRUCTURES

A description is given of tests carried out to study the behavior of mortar compression joints in framed structures, where the columns being joined contain high percentages of reinforcement. The amount and type of transverse binding reinforcement in the column ends were also varied. The experimental investigation was augmented by a theoretical analysis of the joint zone using a plane stress-plane strain finite element computer program, which was also used to study the influence on joint strength of the restraint provided by the floor system. Recommendations are given for assessing the strength of such joints for varying percentages of column reinforcement and suggestions are made for proportioning the joint and detailing the reinforcement in the ends of the columns. /Author/TRRL/
