RECOMMENDATION FOR ROAD SURFACE DRESSING
This road note supersedes both Road Note 1, which dealt with tar dressings, and Road Note 38, concerned with cut-back bitumen dressings. One of the major factors in the selection of a specification for surface dressing is the volume of traffic a road carries and an important revision in the new road note is the definition of traffic categories appropriate to present-day intensities. The probability of embedment of dressings into the road surface with resultant loss of texture is considered in relation to the number of commercial vehicles, and emphasis is laid on the need for different specifications for each lane of multi-lane roads. Recommendations are also made for the use of different sizes of chippings in substrates of different hardness to prevent embedment of them by traffic. The increased speed of modern traffic imposes a serious risk of damage to newly completed surface dressings and of broken windscreens from flying chippings, and the road note stresses the need for traffic speed control and the early and complete removal of surplus chippings. General recommendations about the important aspects of planning and organizing surface dressing operations are given, together with a flow diagram setting out the logical steps for developing a specification for the particular road to be treated. /Author/TRRL/
