AN ATTEMPT TO MEASURE THE AFFINITY OF SOME MODEL ORGANIC COMPOUNDS FOR PVC USING A GAS CHROMATOGRAPHIC TECHNIQUE

An attempt has been made to rationalize the affinity of PVC for various types of bituminous binders by studying the behavior of model compounds injected into a gas chromatograph in which the column was packed with PVC powder. The results appeared consistent with the known compatibility between PVC and bituminous binders and demonstrate that a considerable affinity exists between PVC and hydrocarbons containing functional groups and also strongly aromatic compounds which predominate in coke-oven tar. This appears to be influenced by the configuration of molecules, the presence of non-reactive groups in the molecules diminishing the affinity for PVC. These results suggest that PVC powder might be used in gas chromatography as an agent for the identification of certain components of mixtures of hydrocarbons by their selective retention on a small loop filled with the powder. It was shown that aromatic components can be identified in mixtures of aromatics, N-,ISO- and cyclo-paraffins. It appears to be as effective, in this regard, as some accepted molecular sieves, with the advantage of cheapness, and it requires no treatment prior to use. Its use for this purpose is governed by the limitation to use the material at temperatures less than 100 degrees (C)-generally the most suitable maximum temperature for PVC in these investigations was found to be 70 degrees (C). /Author/
