ATTITUDES, OPINIONS, AND EXPERIENCES OF RESIDENTS DISPLACED HIGHWAYS UNDER THE 1970 RELOCATION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM

In this analysis of the experiences of residents relocated from their homes as a result of highway location (in several areas of Texas), interviews were conducted with 165 households from the total of 1,130 relocated households. The suggestions of relocatees regarding the relocation assistance program and other right-of-way practices were analyzed, and recommendations were made to the highway agency which related to the improvement of program practices, public awareness and public acceptance. The study revealed that the relocation housing scheme enabled many respondents to upgrade their housing and neighborhood accomodation. Most survey respondents thought that housing and moving payments were adequate, the relocation program and relationship with the state highway department were good, and the latter department has successfully solved most of the problems associated with relocation.
