Autonomous Vehicles and the Moral Domain
This paper explores human factors in addition to ethical and liability challenges associated with the adoption of self-driving vehicles. In the Background section, we survey related works and provide initial context on the subject of self-driving vehicles. We provide some basic definitions, analyze available AV crash reports and explore common issues related to user acceptance of AI systems. In the Ethics and Liability section, we introduce a few ethical frameworks, explore ethical considerations in dilemmic situations related to self-driving vehicles and highlight concerns around the rapid advancements in AVs and the law, which may not be equipped to react as quickly to innovations in self-driving cars. Research in this area may help provide a roadmap in developing global and socially acceptable principles for machine ethics.
