PARKING PROBLEMS IN CONJUNCTION WITH URBAN RENEWAL

PARKERINGSTION I SANERINGSSAMMANHANG

A survey was conducted in four selected towns in Sweden to ascertain the possible need for the communities to have parking standards in conjunction with urban renewal. Interviews were conducted with people living and working in the four towns, and building committees in 20 different communities were contacted. Survey questions dealt with car ownership, reasons for renting parking spaces, street parking regulations, traffic environment, and visitors' parking. The municipalities were asked whether they applied their own parking standards or subscribed to those set forth by the National Board of Urban Planning. A table presents the findings of the survey, which vary. Where local parking standards are followed, they are usually lower than those recommended. It was not possible to determine from the survey whether urban renewal is sometimes abandoned because of difficulties encountered in complying with the national standard.
