ESTIMATING THE WIND RESISTANCE OF CARGO SHIPS AND TANKERS

A study was made of the wind resistance of current merchant ships designs, based on available experimental results. Various methods of estimating wind resistance were evaluated. A proposed method which allows for natural wind gradients appears promising but needs more experimental data. A method based on current practice at the Naval Ship Research and Development Center is recommended for interim use. Model full-scale powering correlation studies were made using the recommended method. A change in the correlation allowance presently in use is discussed.
