Model of High Speed Railway Wheel Ovalization

Periodic non-roundness of railway wheels causes various vehicle-track coupling system dynamic responses, which has a detrimental influence on both the track and vehicle components. In order to guarantee safety and stability, and to minimize costs for repair and maintenance, it is desirable to determine a range for acceptable roundness values and to detect, remove, and repair out-of-roundness wheels in time. This paper analyzes the problem of out-of-round railway wheels that are in service and creates categories for non-roundness of railway wheels. A calculation method using long wavelength to determine periodic non-roundness is proposed. In addition, a new mathematical model is put forth to numerically simulate wheel ovalization, which is called the second order periodic non-roundness of the wheel. Wheel ovalization is converted to track geometric irregularity as system excitation in the traditional way. In the numerical simulation, the dynamic model of a half railway vehicle coupled with a tangent track is employed, in which elliptical railway wheels are considered in the calculation of the wheels and the rails in rolling contact. Using this new numerical method investigates vehicle-track coupling system dynamic responses including lateral and vertical displacement of wheelsets and the vehicle, and lateral and vertical vibration acceleration of the track at different phase angles of the two side wheels of the same wheelset. These responses are compared with those of the traditional model. The numerical results show that the discipline and frequency of dynamic responses are accordant; however, the amplitude and the phase of lateral dynamic responses are different. It is concluded that the traditional track geometric irregularity excitation model does not truly simulate the effect of periodic wheel ovalization on vehicle-track coupling system dynamic behavior. The new model is more accurate and reasonable.
