A CONTRIBUTION TO THE THEORY OF BOX-GIRDERS OF ARBITRARY CROSS-SECTIONAL SHAPES

The purpose of this paper is to develop a method of determining the shear flows and warping forces in multi-celled box members of arbitrary cross-sectional shape without the need for excessively laborious calculations. When applied to members having closed cross-sections such as box-girders, the conventional theory of warping torsion gives insufficiently accurate results. Owing to the relatively high flexibility in warping shear of thin-walled box-sections, the statically-indeterminante internal warping stresses cannot develop to anything like the values presupposed by conventional theory. In the present method, a correction based on energy considerations is introduced to take account of the influence of shear deformation. /Author/
