ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERNS AFFECTING FUTURE URBAN TRANSPORTATION

This paper addresses air, noise, and water pollution, and the loss of prime agricultural lands--issues that could make it difficult to meet future urban transportation needs. The author believes that none of those factors will seriously inhibit urban transportation development. The continuing challenge, he asserts, is "how to plan, locate and design transportation facilities and services to avoid and and minimize adverse environmental impacts--more significantly, how to fit transportation facilities and services in the urban setting. New design innovations, legislative changes, and socioeconomic understanding are needed to better coordinate transportation, urban development, and the surrounding environment."
