URBAN TRANSPORTATION PERSPECTIVES
The authors look at seven ideological, sometimes overlapping perspective that help establish the overall conceptual framework. These approaches are the: Auto monopolists ("Highway Lobby"); (2) Auto apologists (the personal auto is socially desirable because it offers free choice; (3) Social engineers (academics emphasizing short-range actions to create social equity in mobility opportunities); (4) Trustbusters (advocating dismantling the highway trust fund); (5) Transit technicians (in pursuit of a dominating role for public transit); (6) Balancers (searching for the appropriate modal mix; and (7) Ecologists (seeing transportation considerations extending for beyond the objectives of moving people and goods. The authors prefer the ecological approach. The basic question they believe is "not what kind of transportation do we want, but rather, what kind of city do we want."
