TRIAL PROGRAM AND SITE PREPARATIONS OF THE ALF TRIAL AT SOMERSBY

This report describes the site and the site instrumentation of the Somersby ALF trial which commenced in July 1984 on the Sydney-Newcastle Freeway. This was the first field trial of the newly commissioned ALF machine. The objectives of the trial include the investigation of the pavement response to loading as well as the testing of the ALF machine and its instrumentation under continuous operation. The trial and testing program is discussed in detail and full account is given of the initial (pre-trial) pavement conditions in the attached tables. The report recommends that the trial be continued until total pavement failure, that the pavement instrumentation be revised, that methods of surface and subsurface deflection measurement be further developed and that the falling weight deflectometer be used regularly during the trial. For the record of the covering entry see TRIS no 399524. (Author/TRRL)
