BOX GIRDER BRIDGE HINGE RESTRAINER TEST PROGRAM

Full scale structural testing of bridge components with earthquake inputs has been missing from experimental research programs in the USA. Facilities that are required must be substantial, but they can be developed at University and National Laboratories. Bridge structural components have geometric size and strength capabilities that are comparable in magnitude with full scale building components. A structural test facility which accommodates full scale bridge component specimens has been missing from experimental research programs in the USA. Facilities that are required must be substantial, but they can be developed at University and National Laboratories. Bridge structural components have geometric size and strength capabilities that are comparable in magnitude with full scale building components. A structural test facility which accommodates full scale bridge component specimens has been constructed at UCLA. The initial experiments conducted using the facility focus on testing the restrainers which are used to retrofit box girder highway bridges. The restrainers are installed so that hinge separation is prevented during earthquakes. (Author)
