UNCONVENTIONAL SYSTEMS FOR LOCAL TRANSPORT

Novel rail systems have to proceed from concrete objectives: first of all there are the passengers' requirements, then the aims of the operator, those affected, and the manufacturer. They are compared here with the new systems in West Germany, the development and characteristics of which are briefly described. A quantitative and in part subjective analysis shows that the effort to avoid the drawbacks of conventional transport systems without forfeiting their advantages has been largely successful. However, owing to the need for a continuous, separate and mostly elevated track together with advanced automation, the possibilities should not be overestimated even if a real market exists.
