Transferring crumb rubber modified gap-graded asphalt technology to Queensland (2020-21)

The use of crumb rubber as a modifier in bitumen can provide a sustainable solution to deal with the millions of scrap tyres that are produced annually in Australia. The National Asset Centre of Excellence had previously developed a new technical specification for the use of crumb rubber modified (DRM) binders in asphalt by using viscometers to determine the viscosity of the modified binder at 175 degrees Celsius. Subsequent testing by others found that two viscometers did not necessarily provide similar results for a particular binder, so further research was therefore required. This report documents test results confirming that viscometers returned differing results. It also shows that a project-specific offset could potentially be established for a particular CRM binder that can be used for quality assurance purposes during construction. Recommendations are then made for consideration by Department of Transport and Main Roads.
