NORDIC CO-OPERATION IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF METHODS FOR MEASURING THE WATER RESISTANCE OF ASPHALT MIXTURES

ASFALTTIMASSAN VEDENKESTAVYDEN MITTAUSMENETELMIEN KEHITTAMINEN POHJOISMAISENA YHTEISTYONA

There is no satisfactory and generally accepted method for measuring water resistance and adhesion of asphaltic mixtures. Imperfect adhesion between bitumen and aggregate has often been thought the cause of pavement faults. The laboratory team of the binder committee, appointed by the asphalt section of the nordic association of road engineers, has developed a method for testing the water resistance of pavement and the adhesion between aggregate and binder. For testing the water resistance of pavement samples, a splitting tensile strength test was chosen, and for testing the adhesion of pavement materials, the so-called roll bottle test was used with the following results: (1) the splitting tensile strength test is applicable to the testing of the water resistance of asphalt mixtures in pavement studies and mix design; and (2) the roll bottle test is not very accurate. It does not give absolute values. It is applicable to proportional comparisons, classification and, for material suppliers, quality control. (TRRL)
