WEATHER AND DRIVING SPEEDS: LONG-TERM STUDY ON A MAIN ROAD
SAAN JA KELIN VAIKUTUS AJONOPEUKSIIN: PITKAAIKAISSEURANTA VALTATIE
This article reports on a system for long-term collection of both speed and vehicle-type data developed at the Traffic Research Unit, University of Helsinki. Using inductive loops, the system is capable of classifying vehicle types correctly in about 95% of cases, and is capable of storing speed, time headway and type data for each individual vehicle for periods of several weeks unattended. Maximum speed decrements were about 20% below the normal level. Additionally, some decrease in traffic volume with respect to typical figures, maximum 17%, was also found during week-ends, connected with fog and other adverse weather conditions. (TRRL)
