VANCOUVER'S LRT IS READY FOR THE WORLD

Vancouver, BC, will complete its 14-mile transit line in early 1986, well before the opening of Expo '86. BC Transit features linear motor propulsion, automatic operation, SELTRAC train control, compact cars with steerable trucks and fiber optics communications. About 8 miles will be elevated double-track guideway, 3.7 miles at surface and 1.2 miles in a refurbished CP Rail tunnel which has been altered to accommodate the two tracks on two levels. Much of the route follows an abandoned interurban right-of-way. BC government worked closely with private firms to redevelop land near the 15 stations. A linear park is being developed along the rail line. The linear induction motor used on the 114 cars was developed for Urban Transportation Development Corp. of Ontario. Rapid transit was needed at Vancouver because the all-bus system could not cope with future demand. BC Transit will be closely coordinated with the bus system. There are already extensions of the transit line in the planning stage.
