WMATA PROGRESS TOWARDS 160KM SYSTEM

Washington Metro can document extensive adjacent economic development as its system has grown from 7.5 km in 1976 to 97.3 km and 60 stations in 1985. In 1984 funding agreements were completed between local jurisdictions to achieve the final system length of 144 km. Currently an order for 294 rapid transit cars is being delivered by Italy's Breda. Much attention has been given to providing attractive transportation and assuring passenger security at all points in the system. In 1985 Metro is to continue efforts to control costs and seek federal funding for continued construction.
