SAPPORO BUILDS A THIRD ROUTE
Sapporo operates two rapid transit lines totaling 32 km that currently carry over 500,000 riders daily. This metro forms a core network and is closely integrated with buses to suburban areas. Heavy snows foster the use of transit in this northern Japanese city and elevated portions of the line are completely covered by continuous aluminum shelters to assure reliable operation of the rubber-tired trains. Full automatic train operation and automatic train control are to cover all lines. While the rapid transit is already coordinated with some feeder services, there is eventually to be a more fully integrated transit system.
