METRO MANILA
Manila, a metropolitan region of 8 million got its first mass transit service late in 1984 when the first section of its Metrorail light rail transit was opened. Planning started in 1976 and construction in 1981. The double-track line is carried about 6 m above street level on an 8-m wide prestressed concrete elevated structure supported on single columns designed to be earthquake-resistant. The 18 stations are situated at major road intersections and commercial centers about 850 m apart. The 64 light rail vehicles, 3-section articulated units, can be operated in trains. Initial 5-min headways could eventually be reduced to 80 sec. fare collection is by the token/turnstile system.
