MADRID MODERNISES
Madrid Metro is being modernized and the rolling stock replaced. In 12 years this Spanish system has expanded from 56 to 105 km. Four of the ten routes have been converted to one-person operation and the remainder will be as soon as new cars are procured and the fixed installationa are in place. The new facilities include automatic train protection equipment, train radio and public address systems. The Metro will be incorporated into a new Regional Transport Authority now being set up to assume responsibility for all the region's public transit.
