FM RADAR GOES UNDERGROUND
Southwest Research Institute engineers have developed a prototype VHF/UHF radar system for probing and inspecting subway tunnels built up to a century ago. Among other technologies, the FM radar technique showed the greatest potential for assessing brick-lined tunnels and locating voids under concrete slabs. Field tests have been conducted for Port Authority Trans-Hudson and New York City Transit Authority. Ultimately to be developed is a rail-mounted system capable of rapid surveys and monitoring the structural condition of tunnels on a periodic basis.
