PUBLIC TRANSPORT FOR THE DISABLED. FACILITIES, PROBLEMS AND ASPIRATIONS
This paper deals with public transport and the disabled with particular reference to the greater Manchester area of England. At the moment, the basic provision for public transport consists of (a) Preferential seating arrangements, (b) New property development (ramps, toilets, etc..), (c) Fare concessions (fare reductions, free transport) and (d) Staff assistance. Work that is currently being undertaken is (a) Arrangement of entrances and exits, (b) Front entrance wheelchair lift, (c) Door arrangements, (d) Rear lift entrance, (e) Internal lift, (f) Rear lift, (g) Details of emergency side ramp, (h) continental offside ramp, (i) Hoist arrangement, (j) Transfer from wheelchair to seat, (k) Securing the wheelchair, (l) Alternative securing of seating, (m) Framework detail, (n) Wheelchair fixing to floor, and (o) Vehicle safety.
