SWEDISH MEASURES TO ADAPT PUBLIC TRANSPORT SYSTEM TO THE NEEDS OF THE DISABLED

A newly established central authority, the Swedish Board of Transport, has been given the responsibility for coordinating the adaptation of public transport to facilitate travel by handicapped persons. The authority is working on the basis of the following: (1) Public transport is of vital importance as a means of transport, and especiatly for the handicapped; (2) It is a question of enabling people to take part in community activities on equal terms, and (3) Therefore an obvious feature of the aim of transport policy is to provide the public with adequate transport facilities, making them accessible as far as possible for passengers of all categories. The following groups are categorized: (1) Persons in wheelchair, (2) Persons with ambulatory handicaps, (3) Persons with visual handicaps, (4) Persons with auditory handicaps, (5) Persons suffering from, allergies or asthma and (6) Persons with other handicaps.
