YEAR 2000 TRANSPORTATION PLAN FOR THE DELAWARE VALLEY REGION
Need for a new and more thorough round of planning based on the new realities and expectations of the 1970s was perceived by the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC), and new planning started in the late 1970s to prepare a transportation plan for the Delaware Valley region. This region includes nine counties in Pennsylvania and New Jersey and comprises an area of 3833 square miles and a population of over five million people. The transportation facilities of this region are generally old and deteriorating, and must be improved. This article summarizes the Year 2000 planning process and describes the highlights of the Year 2000 Transportation Plan adopted in 1981 by the Board of the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission. Subjects covered include the highway system plan, public transportation plan, plan evaluation and implementation, and others.
