HYDROSHIELD ALLEVIATES THE PRESSURE ON ROME'S URBAN RAILWAY DRIVES
In 1962 Italian tunnelers using traditional hand mining techniques to drive the Galleria Aurelia double track railway tunnel through wet running ground conditions under the streets of Rome were forced to abandon their gallant efforts. It remained in this unfinished state for almost 20 years. In that time, technology has advanced to the point where difficult geology is no longer the tunneling obstacle it used to be. Now there is a highly specialized mechanical method of dealing with nearly all types of ground conditions and in Rome the world's largest Hydroshield is completing the 10.64m diameter tunnel started originally in 1948.
