DESIGNS OF BBC TRACTION MOTORS FOR ALL COMING TRAIN HAULAGE DUTIES

Demands for higher specific drive ratings, advances in the utilization of power electronics and progress in insulation systems called for a new generation of traction motors. Modular design and a change to temperature class 'C' are features of the type 'K' motors for pulsating current and three-phase ac. Use of these is becoming increasingly widespread and they are steadily superseding the traditional single-phase ac and series-wound dc motors. The author describes the design concept of the latest traction motors and considers operating experience and questions of maintenance.
