EARTHQUAKE-PROOF REINFORCEMENT OF RAILWAY EMBANKMENT ON SOFT GROUND
At present, in preparing for future large earthquakes, many embankments which are on soft ground on the Tokaido Shinkansen of Japanese National Railways, are reinforced, in order to increase their earthquake resistance. The reinforcement is carried out by the sheet pile enclosure method with tie rods. This method was developed by investigations of seismic damage, vibration experiments, theoretical analyses and seismometry, and is described in this paper.
