NANTES IMPROVES ITS BUS SYSTEM AND DEVELOPS LRT
The city of Nantes has joined with 18 nearby townships to form an intercommunal authority -a public company called SEMITAN, Since its formation eight years ago, bus services have vastly improved with about 22 m F.F. being spent on modernisation including the purchase of articulated buses, buses for the disabled, passenger information systems and bus shelters. Nearly half the passengers buy their tickets off the bus. Plans for a 10.5 km electric tramway passing through the city centre near the main railway station were approved in 1981 and it is hoped that the system will start operating in 1985. Services will be provided by the French standard tram -a two section articulated car capable of carrying 168 passengers under normal conditions. Travel times are expected to decrease by 17 per cent because the trams' capacity is 140 per cent more than the standard bus and 70 per cent more than the articulated bus. About 40 per cent of the 49 m F.F. funds were from centeral government the balance being raised from a one percent payroll tax. (TRRL)
