JAKARTA SWITCHES FROM BUSES TO TRAINS TO EASE CONGESTION
A fundamental decision has been taken for a major modal switch from road to rail as the only realistic way to cope with growing social and economic activity in Jakarta and its environs. The decision was taken partly because of the existence of a skeletal urban rail system which though totally inadequate for today's needs provided a surface system which could be developed at much less expense than building a new metro system. The switch will give Indonesia its first experience of high intensity commuter railway operations. The overall $US 1 billion project is called JABOTABEK (an acronym derived from place names in the system) and includes 26 sub-projects covering new and improved lines, track-doubling, electrification, modern signalling, enlarged and improved stations and new rolling stock. The works will create a 9-line system operating about 500 new electric rail cars. Peak period ridership is expected to increase at least 10 fold from 14000 passengers in 1980 to 147000 in 2000. The population of the JABOTABEK area is expected to double by the end of the century. Details of the masterplan for the scheme which has been devised by the Japan Railway Technical Services (JARTS) are given. The plan is divided into 3 parts -rehabilitation of existing infrastructure, additional works to increase transport capacity and the construction of 2 new lines. (TRRL)
