DEREGULATION - A SPUR TO BETTER BUS SERVICES

The view is put forward that public sector bus operators should not be swayed by the campaigns of politicians and pressure groups which decry the governments proposals for the deregulation of bus operation. It is suggested that on the contrary this prepares the ground for imaginative and competitive services and is good news for both the industry and the travelling public. Examples are given of existing successful privately run schemes including Linleys of Lymm, a company operating 12 minibuses in Cheshire, and the Tillingbourne Bus Company who operate a fleet of 16 buses on rural services in Surrey. The service in Lymm is described in detail with particular reference to provisions for the elderly and handicapped. Many of the points raised by the anti-deregulation lobby indluding fares, irresponsible operators and safety standards are discussed with the conclusion that deregulation will bring better value for many public transport.
