TUNNEL JACKING - THE NEW ALTERNATIVE
The Surrey road relief foul sewer is a 1080 m long, 1.8 M dia tunnel being constructed in two drives of 520 m and 560 m to replace an existing 21 in pipe built in heading in about 1905. The paper outlines the background to the construction of the tunnel and the reasons for the decision to include the option of construction by jacking in the tender documents. The equipment being used, and its limitations and advantages are described. (Author/TRRL)
