THE MINIBUS - THE ACCEPTABLE FACE OF PUBLIC TRANSPORT?
The recent upsurge in interest in the use of minibuses in urban areas is discussed. Though in vogue at present, especially since the publication of the Buses White Paper, the author points out some of the reservations that the bus industry holds especially with regard to the law. There is said to be a considerable body of opinion wishing to see the introduction of operator licensing for all minibuses with all the ramifications of drivers licensing, drivers hours and vehicle testing. It is felt that the larger midibus vehicles (16 to 25 seats) could be a growth area of the future due to their greater potential for innovation and viability. Some of the midibus models that have been introduced in the past are reviewed. These include the Ford A, the Seddon, the Bedford JJL and the Dennis Domino. (TRRL)
