RISK CONTROL THROUGH CLASSIFICATION OF STRUCTURES AND RELIABILITY ASSURANCE

Close interrelation exist between the reliability model of a code of practice and the prevalent practices in quality assurance during the design and construction stages. The extent and level of the quality assurance measures depends on the perceived risk of failure of a particular structure and on the safety index implied in the code. A classification system for structural projects is proposed for guidance of the designer in selecting an appropriate quality assurance scheme. The need for a global risk control plan is discussed.
