WIND LOADS AND LIMIT STATES DESIGN
The traditional, semi-probabilistic approach to design for wind loads is discussed, and changes in format for the Australian standard on wind forces to bring it into conformity with limit states design, are suggested. The main features of this proposal are characteristic wind speeds for ultimate and serviceability limit states. A probabilistic model for wind loads, to enable safety indices to be computed for structural design is described. Wind loading parameters determined both from direct application of the wind code and from special wind tunnel tests are considered. Computation of safety indices for a typical design case shows that the same load factor for wind loads determined by the two methods can be used (Author/TRRL)
