MECHANICAL REINFORCEMENT SPLICES

If a structure is designed to the New Zealand Standard (NZS) 3101 part 1: 1982 "Code of Practice for the Design of Concrete Structures", there are a number of requirements for the use and performance of reinforcement splices which have to be satisfied. This standard sets out rules on how, when and where reinforcing bars may be lapped, welded or connected. These requirements cover such details as: (1) allowable methods; (2) strength requirements for the splice; (3) limitation on position and number of splices; (4) reinforcement details. When a mechanical connection is to be used the standard requires that the system be tested to demonstrate certain physical properties. The acceptable levels for these properties are set out in the standard.
