THE AUTOMATIC WAY TO SLOW DOWN SAFELY
A description is given of the new Ford Granada, the first mass-produced car to have anti-lock brakes as standard equipment. The automatic braking sequence (abs) releases and reapplies the brakes many times a second and transmits a knocking through the brake pedal to indicate its operation. Stopping distances on wet roads are reduced by 30% and can be halved on ice. Information from sensors on the wheels is processed by an electric control module and converted into vehicle speed and wheel slip. When wheel lock is detected, inlet and outlet valves on the hydraulic system are activated. Also described is an alternative mechanical system the stop control system (scs) developed by Girling. The two systems are compared and found to be suitable for different markets. (TRRL)
