ROAD TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS AND WASTAGE OF HUMAN RESOURCES IN NIGERIA

Civilisation has advanced most in areas with fewer problems of linkage and accessibility. The largest settlements are major transportation centres and transportation development often starts the change of rural areas to urban centres. The study examines the sociological consequences of road traffic accidents through the development trends in road transportation, highway traffic accidents and their major causes. About 8000 people are killed, and 30000 persons injured each year in Nigeria. The lack of roadway education is the prime cause because the majority of the accidents occur on the best roads. Failure of the various law enforcement agents to rigorously fight the social ills of the society also contribute to the occurrence of road traffic accidents. Although drivers do not always obey road signs and traffic signals the signs are often not at the appropriate location. Damaged vehicles are not removed quickly enough. Roads and bridges should be widened, made more even and straightened, especially at points where fatal accidents consistently occur. (TRRL)
