THE APPLICATION OF A DESIGN VERIFICATION SYSTEM AND ACCELERATED MISSION TESTING TO GAS TURBINE ENGINE DEVELOPMENT

Two advanced techniques are described for improving the process of designing and developing high-technology gas turbine engines. The techniques being applied at the Pratt and Whitney Aircraft Government Products Division are: a design verification system (DVS), and the accelerated mission test (AMT). These tools are not new, but recent advances in high-technology instrumentation and sophisticated, computerized design prediction methods, and current awareness of the importance of mission duty cycle on engine hardware life and reliability have made them more effective. DVS disciplines confirm that the basic design is based on sound assumptions of internal engine operating conditions before major development activities are initiated. AMT techniques subject engine hardware to damaging portions of the mission duty cycle to identify and expose service-related problems early. These tools are intended to provide improved product reliability during the early operational phase and to reduce ultimate cost of ownership.
