LOW VIBRATION 20 HP (HORSEPOWER) MINI-RPV (REMOTELY PILOTED VEHICLE) ENGINE
A twin crank, geared output engine is being developed to satisfy the requirement for reliable, low vibration, compact reciprocating engines for small remotely piloted vehicles (mini-RPV's). The Bennett mini-RPV engine is a 20-hp, two-cylinder, two-stroke, simultaneously firing twin crankshaft unit, with the twin cranks geared to a common output shaft. Cranks run in separate cavities in a common housing. Induction is by twin carburetors, each feeding through a separate crankshaft-mounted rotary valve. In effect, the machine consists of two independent single-cylinder engines. The special feature of the engine is its very low vibration. An analysis and the resulting balance criterion that gives low vibration are presented.
