A MODULAR DESIGN CONCEPT FOR HEAVY DUTY TRANSMISSIONS OF WHEELED AND TRACKED VEHICLES
A design concept has evolved for the configuration of heavy-duty transmissions based on the building block approach. Basically, an automotive transmission is a propulsion drive system that accepts as its input the speed, torque, and power characteristics output by the prime mover and delivers the requisite speed, torque, and power level compatible with vehicle load and operational requirements. This overall objective is achieved via a functional combination of subsystems or modules. A transmission system includes input, coupling, direction change, change speed, output, service, control, auxiliary power, option, and brake modules. Functional characteristics inherent in vehicle transmissions are configured by integrating requisite modules to meet drive train requirements for commercial vehicles and off-highway wheeled and tracked vehicles. These functional modules provide for total interchangeability within a preselected drive train handling range, and transmission system configurations permit flexible, compatible, and custom-built drive train packages. Specific transmission functions related to skid-steered vehicles and advantages of the modular design concept are addressed. Trends in automotive transmission manufacture are explored.
