THE MOPED--THE POTENTIAL FOR SAVING OVER 5 BILLION GALLONS OF GASOLINE YEARLY IN THE UNITED STATES
Based on the characteristics of the moped and on travel patterns in the U.S., the yearly number of trips which are within moped capability are estimated. The corresponding number of miles traveled and fuel savings to be realized through moped use are quantified. Most of the data are from the "National Personal Transportation Study" conducted in 1969-1970 by the Bureau of the Census for the Federal Highway Administration. It is determined that the use of the moped to its full commuting capabilities would result in an annual savings of over 5 billion gallons of gasoline in the U.S. Appended data indicate the distribution of trips by sex in each age group for major transportation modes; percentage of automobile trips by season and trip length, and of single occupancy trips; automobile mi./day for trips under 10 mi. (single occupancy); and yearly moped capable mileage and gasoline consumption. Also appended are a table and charts providing a picture of motor vehicle travel (and fuel consumption) in the U.S. in 1976 (over 1.4 trillion motor vehicle miles traveled, 76.2% by passenger car).
